A Des Moines attorney is facing a possible suspension of her law license for repeatedly missing deadlines in her clients’ criminal case appeals. The Iowa Attorney Disciplinary Board has accused Karmen R. Anderson of violating three of Iowa’s rules of professional conduct for attorneys by missing court-imposed deadlines, failing to expedite clients’ appeals and engaging in conduct prejudicial to the administration of justice, Iowa Capital Dispatch reports . The alleged violations are tied to what the Grievance Commission of the Iowa Supreme Court calls “Anderson’s heavy appellate caseload, her unwillingness to ask for assistance with that caseload, and her lack of mechanisms in place to prevent missed deadlines.” Court records indicate Anderson missed 42 appellate deadlines, resulting in 24 default notices in more than 20 cases that she handled between December 2019 and October 2023 A year-round sports park east of the Ankeny Costco would feature space for hockey, lacrosse, baseball and softball. The Des Moines Register reports the project, known as I-35 Sports Park, would cost $85 million to $90 million and sit on 50 acres. It is being pursued by a collection of youth sports nonprofits in Ankeny and Ames. “There’s nothing like it from a lacrosse standpoint in the Midwest," developer David Lane, owner and programming director of Prairie Trail Sports Complex in Ankeny, told the newspaper. The parents of an autistic boy have sued the Storm Lake Community School District and their son's special education teacher in federal court, saying her negligence resulted in the boy chewing and swallowing a portion of a battery. The Sioux City Journal reports that the parents said the teacher's treatment of their son and the school district's failure to respond to complaints about the teacher's actions violate the Americans with Disabilities Act and they are at fault for the boy needing emergency surgery after swallowing the battery. "The district intends to zealously defend against these claims against it," the school district's attorney, Zachary Clausen, told The Journal in a statement. The Iowa Supreme Court ruled Friday that a recently elected Dallas County official can keep more than $350,000 from a lawsuit alleging his former employe fired him. The Des Moines Register reported that the court found the Iowa Department of Revenue's Alcoholic Beverages Division fired the official after he blew the whistle on illegal practices. The Republican was elected Dallas County auditor and will take office in January. The whistleblower testified that the state charged an improper markup on alcohol it bought at a discount and then resold it to retailers. He was fired after testifying at a trial in 2022. The Cedar Rapids Community School District says a new charter school, open for about four months, is hurting its bottom line. KCRG reports that Empowering Excellence, the city's only charter school, is looking to expand. The public school district said the school has cost it about $855,000 in its fiscal year 2025 budget. Two new charter schools will open next year in Cedar Rapids, bringing the total across Iowa to 13. Charter schools are funded like public schools but aren't under the jurisdiction of local school boards. Des Moines Area Community College has expanded its partnerships in developing curriculum for education on artificial intelligence to better prepare students for a changing professional world. Iowa Capital Dispatch reports that the community college announced that it has been selected to join the National Applied AI Consortium Mentorship program, which will provide DMACC with support and resources from colleges and universities with their own established AI curriculum. “I think it’s important that our education system in general does take the lead on AI in the state of Iowa, so that we can help educate our industry partners, governmental agencies on AI and how they can use it effectively in their organizations,” said Anne Power, executive academic dean for business and information technology at DMACC. Two people were killed and one police officer sustained non-life-threatening injuries in high-speed chase through several counties that ended in a head-on collision, which began after reports of shots fired in Muscatine. A Waterloo nursing home recently acquired by a private equity firm has been fined $10,000 for the death of a 45-year-old resident who choked on a sandwich. Iowa Capital Dispatch reports that a long-time female resident of Waterloo’s Harmony House Health Care Center died on Oct. 21. The 45-year-old resident had a moderate intellectual disability and, according to state inspectors, had special dietary restrictions that limited her food intake to soft, bite-sized items. The state has imposed a $10,000 fine in the case. The Iowa state government will pay the City of Des Moines more than $40,000 following the death of a Des Moines Police Department K-9 officer. AI is reshaping business. This is how we stay ahead of China
By Kemberley Washington, CPA, Bankrate.com (TNS) As the end of the year approaches, now’s the time to start preparing for filing your 2024 tax return in 2025. When it comes to tax strategies, generally Dec. 31 is the deadline to make changes that might lower your tax bill. One major exception is the deadline for contributing to a Roth or traditional IRA : You have until April 15, 2025, to make a contribution to a Roth or traditional IRA for tax year 2024. If you qualify for deductible IRA contributions , then a contribution to your traditional IRA can reduce your taxable income for 2024. Here are tips and strategies to prepare now for the 2025 tax-filing deadline. If you had significant changes in your life in 2024 — maybe you got married or divorced, started your own business, or had to claim unemployment benefits — your taxes may be more complicated. As a result, you might need to hire a certified public accountant (CPA), enrolled agent (EA) or other tax professional to prepare and file your taxes. If you decide to hire someone, it’s best to start planning for that sooner rather than later. Waiting until the calendar flips to April could cost you. The average fee for a professional to prepare and file a simple Form 1040 tax return, with no itemized deductions, is about $220, according to a survey by the National Society of Accountants in 2020-2021, the most recent data available. But that amount rises quickly for more complex returns, and varies depending on where you live. For example, a Form 1040 with itemized deductions costs an average of $432 in states on the Pacific Coast, compared with $285 in New England. No matter where you live, prices usually rise as the tax deadline approaches, so it’s smart to start searching for a tax pro soon. If you’re uncomfortable doing your taxes on your own and can’t afford a CPA, enrolled agent or other tax pro, or to pay for tax software , there are free options to consider. The IRS currently offers three ways to prepare your taxes for free: •With the IRS Free File program, the IRS partners with for-profit tax-software companies that offer free tax-prep software to eligible taxpayers so they can file their federal tax returns for free. Some taxpayers may also qualify for a free state tax filing, depending on the software provider. In January, the IRS will announce the income limit to qualify for the program for the 2025 tax season (for filing 2024 tax returns). For the 2024 tax season (2023 tax returns), taxpayers’ adjusted gross income (AGI) couldn’t exceed $79,000. •The IRS also offers its Direct File program, a free tool that allows you to file your federal income tax return directly with the IRS at no cost. The program supports simple tax returns and is available only in certain states. Check to see if you qualify here. •Another free-filing option is the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program. IRS-certified volunteers offer free basic tax preparation in person to people who earn less than $67,000 a year, are disabled or whose English is limited. The IRS has an online location tool for hundreds of free tax preparation sites in the U.S. (the locator tool is updated from February through April). Some VITA sites also offer online tax-prep assistance. Now is a good time to create an IRS online account. If you want to see your Form 1040 from last year, or you’re missing a prior year Form W-2 or mortgage interest statement, you can find your documents using this free tax tool. Another benefit of creating an IRS online account is that it allows you to quickly obtain your prior year’s tax information without sitting on the phone for hours with an IRS representative, says Carl Johnson, a certified public accountant in New Orleans. An IRS online account also lets you view your account balance and payment history for each year. You can also create a payment plan to settle your federal income tax debt within minutes. If you’re 73 years old and have enjoyed watching your 401(k) or IRA grow tax-free without touching it, remember that the IRS is going to want its share each year. That means you’ll have to make withdrawals — and pay income tax. If you turned 73 in 2024, plan to take your required minimum distribution (RMD) at the latest by April 1, 2025. Read this IRS bulletin for more information. The amount of your RMDs is based on your age and the year-end values of your retirement accounts. A Roth IRA has two big tax advantages over a traditional IRA : Qualified withdrawals are not considered income for federal (and usually state) tax purposes, and you don’t have to take distributions from a Roth every year once you reach age 73. Converting a traditional IRA to a Roth IRA may save you money in the long run. Just know that when you convert an IRA to a Roth, it’s considered taxable income, which will raise your tax bill for that year. Generally, it’s best to convert to a Roth IRA when you’re in a low-income year. As tax season approaches, many people start receiving phone calls, emails and texts from entities claiming to be the IRS. Be wary, and understand that these are scams. Typically, the IRS will mail you a notice before using any other method of communication to notify you concerning issues with your tax return. The IRS won’t reach out via social media or text messaging. Relatedly, the IRS warns taxpayers to be careful when choosing a tax preparer. Taking time to vet your tax preparer is crucial to protect yourself from tax scams and fraud. Before hiring a tax professional, search that person’s name in the IRS database of federal tax return preparers to avoid dishonest “professionals.” “Taxpayers should check the tax professional’s credentials,” Johnson says. Tax pros without credentials “may take questionable positions without any degree of scrutiny or fear of losing their access to the profession,” Johnson says. Taxpayers who don’t file a tax return and owe a tax bill, or who file but don’t pay their tax bill on time, risk severe penalties. The IRS can even seize assets if necessary. Respond quickly if the IRS has been sending you letters because it found an error on your return or claims you owe back taxes. Typically, the IRS will send you a notice if you have a balance due, changes were made to your tax return, or the agency needs additional information. “If you ignore a collection letter from the IRS, you may face wage garnishments, liens, bank levies, and other adverse action. And in some cases, the amount due may increase for failure to respond,” Johnson says. Keep in mind the IRS does offer installment plans and other payment plans. Make copies of your correspondence and use only the U.S. Postal Service, the postmark from which is your proof of timeliness when responding. But whatever you do, don’t ignore the IRS because this may cause more issues in the future. ©2024 Bankrate.com. Distributed by Tribune Content Agency, LLC.

By ERIC TUCKER WASHINGTON (AP) — A ninth U.S. telecoms firm has been confirmed to have been hacked as part of a sprawling Chinese espionage campaign that gave officials in Beijing access to private texts and phone conversations of an unknown number of Americans, a top White House official said Friday. Biden administration officials said this month that at least eight telecommunications companies , as well as dozens of nations, had been affected by the Chinese hacking blitz known as Salt Typhoon. But Anne Neuberger, the deputy national security adviser for cyber and emerging technologies, told reporters Friday that a ninth victim had been identified after the administration released guidance to companies about how to hunt for Chinese culprits in their networks. The update from Neuberger is the latest development in a massive hacking operation that has alarmed national security officials, exposed cybersecurity vulnerabilities in the private sector and laid bare China’s hacking sophistication. The hackers compromised the networks of telecommunications companies to obtain customer call records and gain access to the private communications of “a limited number of individuals.” Though the FBI has not publicly identified any of the victims, officials believe senior U.S. government officials and prominent political figures are among those whose whose communications were accessed. Officials believe the goal of the hackers was to identify who owned the phones and, if they were “government targets of interest,” spy on their texts and phone calls, she said. The FBI said most of the people targeted by the hackers are “primarily involved in government or political activity.” Neuberger said the episode highlighted the need for required cybersecurity practices in the telecommunications industry, something the Federal Communications Commission is to take up at a meeting next month. “We know that voluntary cyber security practices are inadequate to protect against China, Russia and Iran hacking of our critical infrastructure,” she said. The Chinese government has denied responsibility for the hacking.

ISTANBUL US President-elect Donald Trump promised "fully expedited approvals and permits" on Tuesday for those who invest $1 billion or more in the US. The permits would have no limit, including all environmental approvals, Trump said on his Truth Social social media platform. He did not disclose details in his post but he previously promised to provide tax cuts and incentives to companies during his election campaign. Trump also said the US would reduce bureaucracy for those who invest in the US.LAS VEGAS — Players Era Festival organizers have done what so many other have tried — bet their fortunes in this city that a big payoff is coming. Such bet are usually bad ones, which is why so many massive casino-resorts have been built on Las Vegas Boulevard. But it doesn't mean the organizers are wrong. They're counting on the minimum of $1 million in guaranteed name, image and likeness money that will go to each of the eight teams competing in the neutral-site tournament that begins Tuesday will create a precedent for other such events. EverWonder Studios CEO Ian Orefice, who co-founded Players with former AND1 CEO Seth Berger, compared this event to last year's inaugural NBA In-Season Tournament that played its semifinals and final in Las Vegas by saying it "did really well to reinvigorate the fan base at the beginning of the year." "We're excited that we're able to really change the paradigm in college basketball on the economics," Orefice said. "But for us, it's about the long term. How do we use the momentum that is launching with the 2024 Players Era Festival and be the catalyst not to change one event, but to change college basketball for the future." Orefice and Berger didn't disclose financial details, but said the event will come close to breaking even this year and that revenue is in eight figures. Orefice said the bulk of the revenue will come from relationships with MGM, TNT Sports and Publicis Sport & Entertainment as well as sponsors that will be announced later. Both organizers said they are so bullish on the tournament's prospects that they already are planning ahead. Money made from this year's event, Orefice said, goes right back into the company. "We're really in this for the long haul," Orefice said. "So we're not looking at it on a one-year basis." Rick Giles is president of the Gazelle Group, which also operates several similar events, including the College Basketball Invitational. He was skeptical the financial numbers would work. Giles said in addition to more than $8 million going to the players, there were other expenses such as the guarantees to the teams. He said he didn't know if the tournament would make up the difference with ticket sales, broadcast rights and sponsorship money. The top bowl of the MGM Grand Garden Arena will be curtained off. "The math is highly challenging," Giles said. "Attendance and ticket revenues are not going to come anywhere close to covering that. They haven't announced any sponsors that I'm aware of. So it all sort of rests with their media deal with Turner and how much capital they want to commit to it to get these players paid." David Carter, a University of Southern California adjunct professor who also runs the Sports Business Group consultancy, said even if the Players isn't a financial success this year, the question is whether there will be enough interest to move forward. "If there is bandwidth for another tournament and if the TV or the streaming ratings are going to be there and people are going to want to attend and companies are going to want to sponsor, then, yeah, it's probably going to work," Carter said. "But it may take them time to gain that traction." Both founders said they initially were met with skepticism about putting together such an event, especially from teams they were interested in inviting. Houston was the first school to commit, first offering an oral pledge early in the year and then signing a contract in April. That created momentum for others to join, and including the No. 6 Cougars, half the field is ranked. "We have the relationships to operate a great event," Berger said. "We had to get coaches over those hurdles, and once they knew that we were real, schools got on board really quickly." The founders worked with the NCAA to make sure the tournament abided by that organization's rules, so players must appear at ancillary events in order to receive NIL money. Strict pay for play is not allowed, though there are incentives for performance. The champion, for example, will receive $1.5 million in NIL money. Now the pressure is on to pull off the event and not create the kind of headlines that can dog it for years to come. "I think everybody in the marketplace is watching what's going to happen (this) week and, more importantly, what happens afterwards," Giles said. "Do the players get paid on a timely basis? And if they do, that means that Turner or somebody has paid way more than the market dictates? And the question will be: Can that continue?" P Get local news delivered to your inbox!
Trump threatens 100% tariff on the BRIC bloc of nations if they act to undermine US dollarThe underlying reason for this slide continuing was a problem long before that. An offense led by dynamic rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels that was among the NFL's best for a long stretch of the season put up just nine points and 169 yards for the first three-plus quarters against Dallas before falling behind 20-9 and teeing off on the Cowboys' conservative defense. “We just couldn’t really get it going,” said receiver Terry McLaurin , whose lengthy touchdown with 21 seconds left masked that he had just three catches for 16 yards through three quarters. “We’ve got to find a way to start faster and sustain drives, and that’s everybody: the whole coaching staff and the offensive players just going out there and figuring out ways that we can stay on the field.” This is not a new problem for Washington, which had a season-low 242 yards in a Nov. 10 home loss to Pittsburgh and 264 yards four days later in a defeat at Philadelphia. Since returning from a rib injury that knocked him out of a game last month, Daniels has completed just under 61% of his passes, after 75.6% over his first seven professional starts. Daniels and coach Dan Quinn have insisted this isn't about injury. The coaching staff blamed a lack of adequate practice time, but a full week of it before facing the Cowboys did not solve the problem. It is now fair to wonder if opponents have seen enough film of offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury's system to figure it out. “I think teams and coordinators are going to see what other teams have success against us and try to figure out how they could incorporate that into their scheme," Daniels said after going 12 of 22 for 80 yards passing through three quarters in the Dallas game. "We’ve been in third and longer a lot these past couple games, so that’s kind of where you get into the exotic pressures and stuff like that. We’ve just got to be better on first and second downs and stay ahead of the chains.” Daniels has a point there, and it predates this losing streak. The Commanders have converted just 36% of third-down opportunities (27 for 75) over their past seven games after 52% (31 for 60) in their first five. That challenge doesn't get any easier with Tennessee coming to town Sunday. The Titans, despite being 3-8, have the second-best third-down defense in the league at 31.6%. The defense kept the Commanders in the game against Dallas, allowing just 10 points until the fourth quarter and 20 total before kickoff return touchdowns piled on to the other side of the scoreboard. Even Cooper Rush's 22-yard touchdown pass to Luke Schoonmaker with five minutes left came after a turnover that gave the Cowboys the ball at the Washington 44. The defense spending more than 35 minutes on the field certainly contributed to fatigue as play wore on. The running game that contributed to a 7-2 start has taken a hit, in part because of injuries to top back Brian Robinson Jr. The Commanders got 145 yards on the ground because Daniels had 74 on seven carries, but running backs combined for just 57. Daniels could not say how much the rushing attack stalling has contributed to the offense going stagnant. “You’ve got to be able to run the ball, keep the defense honest,” he said. "We got to execute the plays that are called in, and we didn’t do a good job of doing that.” Linebacker Frankie Luvu keeps making the case to be first-year general manager Adam Peters' best free agent signing. He and fellow offseason addition Bobby Wagner tied for a team-high eight tackles, and Luvu also knocked down three passes against Dallas. Kicker Austin Seibert going wide left on the point-after attempt that would have tied the score with 21 seconds left was his third miss of the game. He also was short on a 51-yard field goal attempt and wide left on an earlier extra point. Seibert, signed a week into the season after Cade York struggled in the opener, made 25 of 27 field goal tries and was 22 of 22 on extra points before injuring his right hip and missing the previous two games. He brushed off his health and the low snap from Tyler Ott while taking responsibility for not connecting. “I made the decision to play, and here we are,” Seibert said. “I just wasn’t striking it well. But it means a lot to me to be here with these guys, so I just want to put my best foot moving forward.” Robinson's sprained ankle and fellow running back Austin Ekeler's concussion from a late kickoff return that led to him being hospitalized for further evaluation are two major immediate concerns. Quinn said Monday that Ekeler and starting right tackle Andrew Wylie are in concussion protocol. It's unclear if Robinson will be available against Tennessee, which could mean Chris Rodriguez Jr. getting elevated from the practice squad to split carries with Jeremy McNichols. The Commanders still have not gotten cornerback Marshon Lattimore into a game since acquiring him at the trade deadline from New Orleans. Lattimore is trying to return from a hamstring injury, and the secondary could use him against Calvin Ridley, who's coming off a 93-yard performance at Houston. 17 — Handoffs to a running back against Dallas, a significant decrease from much of the season before this losing streak. Don't overlook the Titans with the late bye week coming immediately afterward. The Commanders opened as more than a touchdown favorite, but after the results over the weekend, BetMGM Sportsbook had it as 5 1/2 points Monday. AP NFL: https://apnews.com/hub/nfl
Orange County scores and player stats for Saturday, Nov. 30WASHINGTON (AP) — The United States is expected to announce that it will send $1.25 billion in military assistance to Ukraine, U.S. officials said Friday, as the Biden administration pushes to get before leaving office on Jan. 20. The large package of aid includes a significant amount of munitions, including for the National Advanced Surface-to-Air Missile Systems and the HAWK air defense system. It also will provide Stinger missiles and 155 mm- and 105 mm artillery rounds, officials said. The officials, who said they expect the announcement to be made on Monday, spoke on condition of anonymity to provide details not yet made public. The new aid comes as Russia has launched a barrage of attacks against Ukraine’s power facilities in recent days, although Ukraine has said it intercepted a significant number of the missiles and drones. Russian and Ukrainian forces are also still in a bitter battle around the Russian border region of Kursk, where Moscow has to help reclaim territory taken by Ukraine. Earlier this month, senior defense officials acknowledged that that the all of the remaining $5.6 billion in Pentagon weapons and equipment stocks passed by Congress for Ukraine before President-elect Donald Trump is sworn in. Trump has talked about getting some type of negotiated settlement between Ukraine and Russia, and spoken about . Many U.S. and European leaders are concerned that it might result in a poor deal for Ukraine and they worry that he won't provide Ukraine with all the weapons funding approved by Congress. The aid in the new package is in presidential drawdown authority, which allows the Pentagon to take weapons off the shelves and send them quickly to Ukraine. This latest assistance would reduce the remaining amount to about $4.35 billion. Officials have said they hope that an influx of aid will help strengthen Ukraine’s hand, should Zelenskyy decide it’s time to negotiate. One senior defense official said that while the U.S. will continue to provide weapons to Ukraine until Jan. 20, there may well be funds remaining that will be available for the incoming Trump administration to spend. According to the Pentagon, there is also about $1.2 billion remaining in longer-term funding through the Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative, which is used to pay for weapons contracts that would not be delivered for a year or more. Officials have said the administration anticipates releasing all of that money before the end of the calendar year. If the new package is included, the U.S. has provided more than $64 billion in security assistance to Ukraine since Russia invaded in February 2022.The gaming world is on the cusp of a revolution, as Virtual Reality (VR) evolves beyond current expectations, promising experiences that blur the line between reality and imagination. Squaring off in the second round of the NCAA Division II football tournament, fourth-seeded (Super Region 1) Slippery Rock defeated top-seeded and PSAC champion Kutztown University 25-24 Saturday afternoon at Andre Reed Stadium in Kutztown. A thrilling game went the distance and then some, and the Golden Bears (11-1) struck first in overtime after The Rock elected to play defense after winning the overtime coin toss. A 2-yard rushing touchdown by Luke Maxwell completed the 9-play drive giving Kutztown a 24-17 lead after the first overtime possession. However, Slippery Rock responded quickly and with vigor, and after a holding penalty brought back a touchdown run on third-and-3 from the 18, a 28-yard touchdown pass from Brayden Long to Logan Ramper put The Rock in position to tie the game. But a closely contested matchup would go just one play further, as Slippery Rock coach Shawn Lutz elected to go for a two-point conversion. To win the game, Long threw a screen pass to Mike Soloman near the left sideline. Soloman then immediately lateralled the ball back to Idris Lawrence in motion along the left side and Lawrence scooted into the end zone just past the left pylon for the game winning conversion. “It was just guts,” Lutz said. “We’re a relentless program. Give all the credit to Kutztown. They’re a great team. Our kids just don’t quit. I’m just really proud of them.” The Golden Bears were 11-0 and the PSAC champion heading into the game. Holding a 14-9 lead with just over 13 minutes left in the fourth, Kutztown stopped The Rock on fourth-and-3 from the Golden Bears’ 44. With a perfect defensive read of a pass coming over the middle, Drew Henson made a hard hit on Mike Soloman who then subsequently dropped what would have been a first down completion from Long. On the ensuing drive Kutztown ran eight straight runs before an incomplete pass on third-and-8 from Slippery Rock’s 21 forced a 38-yard field goal attempt by Will Smith. Smith’s kick was good, making it 17-9 with 6:50 to go in the game. The Rock would not be denied and showed plenty of resilience while trailing in the fourth quarter. An 8-yard touchdown pass from Long to Kam Kruzelyak completed an 11-play, 66-yard drive for Slippery Rock. Long then found Ramper in the back middle of the end zone for a two-point conversion pass as Ramper leaped over the defenders and kept both feet in bounds. “They went for the two point conversions and good for them, I give them a lot of credit for trying to get it done,” Golden Bears coach Jim Clements said. “They hit us on two two point conversions and they just did a great job.” Long finished the game 27-for-39 passing for 288 yards with two touchdown passes and Logan Ramper had a game-high 120 receiving yards off of nine receptions as The Rock outgained the Golden Bears 288-79 through the air. Kutztown had the better game on the ground, outgaining Slippery Rock 229-61 by means of a dominant rushing attack led by Steven Burkhardt who had 82 rushing yards on 13 attempts and a touchdown. Quarterback Judd Novak also had a solid game running the football for the Golden Bears, as the redshirt sophomore had 79 rushing yards and a touchdown run on 12 carries. Novak was also 8-for-17 passing for 79 yards. “It didn’t come down to just the last play,” Clements said. “We had plenty of opportunities to win the game earlier, and we didn’t make plays when we needed to.” A huge 28-yard pass from Novak to Mekhi Gibson on third-and-8 by Kutztown from its own 48 put the Golden Bears in striking distance to start the fourth quarter. Moments later, a 9-yard touchdown run by Novak gave Kutztown its first lead of the game at 14-9. The Golden Bears trailed 9-7 at the half. After receiving the second half kickoff and starting at its own 25, Kutztown picked up three consecutive first downs on three plays to begin a promising drive at the start of the third quarter. However, after making it to The Rock’s 25 yard line, penalties proved costly and a holding penalty on third-and-10 followed by an illegal block in the back made it an insurmountable third-and-30. Slippery Rock led 9-7 at the end of the third. On the opening drive of the game, Slippery Rock orchestrated a dominating 18-play, 75-yard drive that took over ten minutes off the clock. A 1-yard touchdown run by Chris D’Or was the culmination of six first downs and eight rushing attempts that earned him 16 rushing yards for the first quarter. Quarterback Brayden Long was 5-for-5 for 45 passing yards for the Rock on the opening drive. The extra point was no good making it 6-0 to start. Kutztown started its first drive on its own 26 and picked up one first down after Novak rushed for five yards on third-and-2 from the 34. However, the Golden Bears committed an illegal formation penalty on third and 1 from their own 46 and only picked up two yards on a Novak run on third and 6. After making a stop on defense and starting again from its own 16 with nine and a half minutes left in the first half, Kutztown’s offense got going courtesy of a strong ground game from Burkhardt. A 12-play, 84-yard drive ended with a 2-yard touchdown run by Burkhardt after he picked up 57-yards on seven attempts. The score made it 7-6 with 2:12 remaining in the first half. A 30-yard run on second-and-3 by Burkhardt from the Golden Bears’ 23 started the momentum, and then a 2-yard run by Burkhardt on fourth-and-1 on the Slippery Rock 38 kept the drive going. A 12-yard run by Burkhardt on second-and-10 from the 14 set up Kutztown’s first touchdown of the game. With 28 seconds left in the first half, The Rock took over at their own 43 and advanced to the Kutztown 24 before kicking a 41-yard field goal to make it 9-7 at the completion of the first half. At the end of the first half, Slippery Rock had the better passing numbers while the Golden Bears were stronger on the ground. Long was 13-for-19 at the end of the first half for 145 passing yards and the Rock had 36 rushing yards, while Kutztown had 91 rushing yards, with 57 coming from Burkhardt and 22 coming from Novak. Ramper had 82 receiving yards on seven receptions in the first half. Kutztown defeated Slippery Rock 28-16 in last year’s national quarterfinals to advance to the semifinals where the Golden Bears lost to Colorado School of Mines 35-7. The Golden Bears were the 2023 Super Region 1 champions and were a perfect 7-0 in conference play this season. “They’re a great group,” Clements said of Kutztown’s seniors. “They’ve been through a lot. Each of them has their own story on what they’ve done here over the last four or five years. They’re all great kids and I couldn’t have done anything without those guys. They’re probably the winningest senior class in school history if I had to guess or tied with it, so yeah, it’s great group of guys.”NAUGATUCK — Tug Valley will be playing in the state football semifinals for just the second time ever as the No. 1 seed Panthers beat No. 8 Petersburg 49-20 in a Class A quarterfinal game on Saturday evening at Bob Brewer Stadium. The win for the Panthers improved them to a school record 12-0 on the season and they will get to remain home next week as they will welcome No. 4 seed Cameron (11-1) to Naugatuck with a berth in the state title game on the line. The sudden resignation of Justin Trudeau’s finance minister threw his leadership into doubt and his minority government into chaos Monday after Chrystia Freeland quit just hours before she was set to deliver a key fiscal update in the House of Commons. Instead, Freeland’s stunning resignation, her revelations that Trudeau wanted to yank her from the finance portfolio, that she and Trudeau had argued for weeks over “political gimmicks” in the fall economic update, and clashed over how best to ready Canada for the Trump administration’s threatened tariff war set the stage for a day of intense political drama on Parliament Hill. It stunned her cabinet and caucus colleagues and caused chaos among the Liberal ranks, with some like Liberal MP Chad Collins publicly urging Trudeau to resign for the first time. “It’s obvious that Canadians across the country feel the same and want him to leave,” he said. Freeland dropped the announcement on “X” — formerly Twitter — via a missive just as Housing Minister Sean Fraser announced he was quitting for “family reasons,” he said. It took him, too, by surprise. Finance officials had almost no notice of their minister’s plans which immediately threw the launch of the fall fiscal economic statement into disarray. The prime minister huddled with his top officials and cabinet ministers all morning. By midday, it was not clear whether the prime minister would address Canadians, or would have some other minister step in to deliver the speech about the fall statement after markets close at 4 p.m. Immediately upon Freeland’s news, the Toronto stock exchange and the Canadian dollar dipped. The lock-up for media began several hours late, once word came the fall update had to be delivered. Senior government officials said the document would be presented because the markets need certainty. Freeland and Fraser’s departures from Justin Trudeau’s cabinet are a blow to the Liberal government and sowed more confusion in an unstable minority Parliament and reignited questions about the prime minister’s political future. Several of his most loyal ministers left cabinet without taking any questions. Freeland’s statement said Trudeau told her Friday he no longer wants her to serve as finance minister and offered her another unspecified position in cabinet, signalling she no longer had his confidence and leading to her resignation. Freeland, who was in Ottawa on Monday, said she intends to remain sitting as an MP and to contest her seat in the next election. The prospect of a snap election — which the Conservatives called for — could not be ruled out, given the explosive reaction to Freeland’s exit. The NDP, which has propped up the Trudeau minority government, did not pronounce on what comes next, only issuing a statement that accused the Liberals of being obsessed with infighting. “For the past number of weeks, you and I have found ourselves at odds about the best path forward for Canada,” Freeland said, adding that Canadians “know when we are working for them,” and “when we are focused on ourselves.” Citing the looming threat of U.S. president-elect Donald Trump’s promised tariffs, she said Canada faces a “grave challenge” from his policy of “economic nationalism” that requires fiscal discipline instead of “political gimmicks.” “That means keeping our fiscal powder dry today, so we have the reserves we may need for a coming tariff war. That means eschewing costly political gimmicks we can ill afford and which make Canadians doubt that we recognize the gravity of the moment.” The Trudeau government’s fall fiscal update — which was expected to unveil more than $1 billion in border security measures — comes amid heavy scrutiny over the federal government’s spending and its inability to stick to its own fiscal “guardrails” — the self-imposed spending guidelines Freeland had once set. The Trudeau government has been scrambling for three weeks to allay fears of tariff threats from the incoming Trump administration, and has promised to spend more on helicopters, drones, surveillance technology and manpower at the border. Freeland was offered a ministerial role to deal with Canada-U.S. relations, but the position would have given her none of the tools she had when she renegotiated NAFTA with the previous Trump administration, according to a senior Liberal source. Ministers emerged grim-faced from the cabinet meeting with most offering no comment. Some gamely asserted they continue to have confidence in the government and said Canadians should too. Government rules allow for the industry minister in an emergency to stand in for the finance minister. But Industry Minister François-Philippe Champagne gave no indication he would do so. He told reporters “it is a serious moment” for the government. Asked if he still has confidence in the prime minister, Champagne said “the moment now is for us to focus on the best interest of Canadians, that’s what we’re doing.” Only a few others offered kind words about Freeland, with Fraser, who said he intends to step down on Monday due to family reasons, and Labour Minister Steve MacKinnon describing her as a respected friend. Before the meeting, just minutes after Freeland’s letter was put out, Treasury Board President and Transport Minister Anita Anand appeared on the verge of tears when asked to comment. “I’ll just say that Chrystia Freeland is a good friend, someone I work with very closely,” Anand said. “This news has hit me really hard, and I’ll reserve further comment until I have time to process it.” See my letter to the Prime Minister below // Veuillez trouver ma lettre au Premier ministre ci-dessous pic.twitter.com/NMMMcXUh7A But among the Liberal ranks, calls for Trudeau to resign resurfaced. Wayne Long, one of the MPs who has called on Trudeau to resign before, told the Star he hopes the resignation “opens the door to some cabinet ministers speaking up.” “How much more can the PM endure before doing the right thing and stepping down?” he said. Hamilton MP Chad Collins, who publicly called for the government’s cheque plan to be expanded this fall, also revealed for the first time on Monday that he was among 24 MPs who signed a letter to the prime minister calling on him to step down. Several Liberal MPs, speaking to the Star on the condition they not be named, expressed surprise and disappointment at the news, with one characterizing Freeland’s departure as a “devastating blow” for Trudeau, who earlier this fall survived a challenge from dozens of MPs who called for his resignation. That MP said conversations will be renewed within caucus about the prime minister’s future, and that there will be “reflecting” during the holiday period over next steps. The MP added that they have become increasingly “disillusioned” with running again under the Liberal banner, a feeling they said was prompted by the government’s G ST holiday and $250 rebate proposal for working Canadians, a multibillion dollar affordability plan that threatens Ottawa’s fiscal guardrails promised by Freeland. “We’re going to spend between the two (measures) in excess of $6 billion to what, save Justin Trudeau’s career?” The MP said, noting that Freeland’s reference to “political gimmicks” in her resignation letter was particularly damning. Two other MPs who have not previously called on Trudeau to resign, said now is the time for him to go. One told the Star the best course for the Liberals now is for Trudeau to step down and then table a new throne speech under a new prime minister for a fresh start ahead of the next federal election. The other said it was understandable that Freeland would walk away, in light of how the Liberals are struggling and that their predicament is mainly because of Trudeau. The Star reported this summer that some Liberal MPs wanted Freeland out of cabinet. Freeland has long been rumoured to be a potential successor to Trudeau. Meanwhile, Trudeau’s political opponents in Parliament pounced on the shock resignation, with Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre saying it is evidence that the “government of Canada itself is spiralling out of control.” He said it is now up to NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh to decide whether or not the government falls — and when. While Singh exited his parliamentary accord with the minority Liberals in September, his party has yet to declare a loss of confidence in the Trudeau government. Singh, for the first time, demanded Trudeau resign on Monday, but refused to say if he was prepared to help bring down the government. “All tools, all options are on the table. People are hurting, people are struggling, and so all options are on the table,” the NDP leader said. The chaos extended into question period in the House of Commons, where the Conservatives taunted the Liberals and Poilievre repeatedly asked “who is the Finance Minister?” Government House Leader Karina Gould would only say she looks forward to the tabling of the fiscal update and thanked Freeland for her work. In Toronto, asked if the premiers were concerned about Freeland’s stunning resignation Monday, Ontario Premier Doug Ford said: “We all are.” Ford, chair of the Council of the Federation, emphasized “this is a time for the premiers to step up, which we’re going to, and project unity across the country.” Fraser, in his own resignation press conference, said he only learned of Freeland stepping down following a reporter’s question. “This is news for me,” he said in French. The Nova Scotia MP, who held the immigration file before moving to housing, said he was not seeking re-election due to family reasons, but described his time in government as “the best job I can imagine having.” He said he made his decision earlier this fall following a surgery. “Our path to creating a family was a challenging one. We’ve experienced the highest of highs and the lowest of lows when it comes to our kids. We have had micro-preemies, lengthy hospitalizations, medical interventions, and know the pain of losing our one-day-old daughter, Ruth, who I miss every day and who I love very much,” he said. Freeland and Fraser’s resignations come as Trudeau prepares to shake up his cabinet after several ministers announced they won’t be seeking re-election this fall. Their resignations make it nine ministers in Trudeau’s cabinet who have stepped down or announced their intention to step down in recent months. The Trudeau government is also facing a byelection in B.C. Monday night where polls suggest they will lose the seat they previously held. With files from Robert Benzie.None

December 16, 2024 This article has been reviewed according to Science X's editorial process and policies . Editors have highlightedthe following attributes while ensuring the content's credibility: fact-checked peer-reviewed publication trusted source proofread by Anna Ettlin, Swiss Federal Laboratories for Materials Science and Technology Switzerland has set itself a goal that is as ambitious as it is necessary: net zero by 2050. One of the most important raw materials on the road to a climate-neutral future is wood. This renewable natural resource binds CO 2 from the atmosphere as it grows. Both as a material and as an energy source, wood and its numerous components offer alternatives to fossil fuels and materials. It is therefore hardly surprising that many sectors of industry plan to rely more on wood in future, whether in construction, in textile manufacturing or even in sectors such as electronics, chemicals and pharmaceuticals. Little is known, however, about how much wood is available for all these desired applications and in what form. In order to shed some light on the matter, researchers from Empa and WSL have now comprehensively analyzed all documented material flows of wood in Switzerland. Their study, which was published in the journal Industrial Ecology , was carried out as part of SCENE, a joint initiative of the ETH Domain. Extensive data for an accurate assessment For their analysis, the researchers used data for the year 2020 from 21 different sources—a methodological challenge, as the figures in the various sources did not always match. Wood is a diverse raw material that can take many forms on its way from harvest to use, often differing in volume and moisture content : raw timber, sawn wood, wood chips, wood pulp for the paper industry and much more. Harmonizing the different material flows was therefore a Herculean task. But the effort was worth it. "Comparable studies from abroad rely heavily on modeling. They have data on how much wood is harvested in the forest, and they use this to calculate the subsequent material flows," explains Nadia Malinverno from Empa's Technology and Society laboratory, the lead author of the study. The Empa team, on the other hand, used "real" data almost throughout, from timber harvesting and import/export to processing, recycling and disposal. This results in a much more accurate picture—albeit not a perfect one, emphasizes Malinverno. "We have to thank our colleagues at WSL and the Federal Office for the Environment (FOEN) for the good data that is available in Switzerland," adds co-author and Empa researcher Claudia Som. Wood should stay wood for as long as possible Switzerland still has considerable potential when it comes to sustainable use of wood. For example, the recycling rate for wood is just under 8%, compared to around 70% for paper. "Of the five to seven million cubic meters of wood that we harvest in Switzerland every year, around 40% is used directly for energy—in other words, it is burned," says Malinverno. The researchers agree that this is far from ideal. "For wood to fulfill its function as a long-term CO 2 sink, it should remain in the technosphere as a material for as long as possible," explains Som. The vision of the researchers and of the SCENE initiative is a so-called cascading use of wood. In this approach, a harvested tree would first be processed into the largest possible high-quality product—such as beams and boards for construction. This wood should then be (re-)used in this function for as long as possible. Only when reuse is no longer feasible would the wood be broken down into the next material stage, for example, as smaller boards, wood chips or wood-based materials. It should only go into the furnace when it can no longer be used as a material. This is just one possible example of a wood cascade. As part of SCENE, the researchers want to investigate in more detail which uses of wood make the most sense, both from an ecological and economic perspective. One of their goals is to take a closer look at selected material flows: In what form is wood present in a particular flow? Where exactly is it produced? How is it treated? And how else could it be used? Nadia Malinverno, Claudia Som and their fellow researchers will be looking into these questions in the coming years. Tedmos Launches its New Line of Rechargeable Puck Lights, Picture Frame Lights and Ceiling Lights. A Perfect Blend of Technology and Design for Modern HomesDENVER (AP) — On a night when rookie quarterback Bo Nix threw one touchdown pass, his defense caught two. In a game where Nix completed 18 passes for 294 yards, his defense picked off three Jameis Winston passes for 171 yards. That defense is Nix’s best friend. Even in a game where it was getting shredded by Winston, Denver's D delivered a pair of pick-6s in a wild 41-32 win over the Cleveland Browns on Monday night. That side of the ball got gouged — allowing a Browns-record 497 yards passing from Winston and a career-best 235-yard receiving performance by former Broncos receiver Jerry Jeudy — but made game-changing plays when it mattered most. “It’s pretty nice for the offense when they bail us out like that,” Nix said. “It was a complete team win." Next up, rest. The Broncos (8-5) enter their bye week two games clear of Indianapolis (6-7) for the final AFC playoff spot. They play the Colts coming out of the break. With a 76% postseason probability, according to the NFL, Nix and the Broncos are setting up for some meaningful football down the stretch. The team hasn't been to the playoffs since winning the Super Bowl after the 2015 season. “We’re a confident bunch right now,” said Nix, whose team has won three in a row. “We’re playing aggressively. We’re playing together. We’re playing with a little bit of confidence and a chip on our shoulder.” The Broncos have graduated to a place where they can overcome sticky situations, such as big games from Winston and Jeudy. “When need be," Nik Bonitto said, “we’re going to find a way to win and that’s what we did.” Bonitto helped lead the way with a 71-yard pick-6 in the second quarter. Ja’Quan McMillian wrapped up the game when he intercepted a pass, fell on his back, got up and sprinted 44 yards for a score with 1:48 left. If that wasn't enough, Cody Barton picked off Winston in the end zone and was on his way for another score, returning it 56 yards before being tackled. “Holy cow. Some games go in a direction you think they are going to go. Obviously that one went in a much different direction,” coach Sean Payton said. "We did enough and made enough plays in the end to win.” This is a Denver defense that leads the league in sacks and now has three interception returns for TDs. “I couldn’t be more proud of our team and just where we’re going,” linebacker Jonathon Cooper said. “It's really important that we get our rest this bye week and come back and look at the film and keep it rolling.” The tandem of Nix and Marvin Mims Jr. They connected on a 93-yard touchdown pass, which is tied for the fourth longest in team history. It's the longest since Jay Cutler found receiver Eddie Royal for a 93-yard score at Cleveland on Nov. 6, 2008. To celebrate, Mims jumped into the stands. “Nobody else was close to me, so I was like: ‘You know what? I’ll jump in the stands,’" he said. “I got grabbed a lot up there. It was cool.” The Broncos had a pair of 100-yard receivers in Mims (105 yards) and Courtland Sutton (102). The defense could use some shoring up after allowing 552 yards of total offense. The Browns were 2 of 2 on fourth down conversions and had 28 first downs. “Through all the bad things, we just stuck together,” McMillian said. “We didn’t split up. We stayed together and kept fighting to the end.” Wil Lutz. The kicker hit both field goals and all five extra points to eclipse 1,000 career points in his 127th game. He's the fifth-fastest player to reach the milestone mark. Levi Wallace. The Browns picked on the cornerback as he tried to cover Jeudy. Denver did stick star cornerback Pat Surtain II on Jeudy at times in an effort to contain him. “He definitely had himself a game,” Surtain said of Jeudy, his teammate with the Broncos and in college at Alabama. Cornerback Riley Moss (knee) was sorely missed as the Broncos struggled to contain Jeudy, Elijah Moore (eight catches, 111 yards) and tight end David Njoku (nine catches, 52 yards and two scores). On Tuesday, the Broncos waived receiver Josh Reynolds, who's been on injured reserve after breaking his finger against Las Vegas in Week 5. Reynolds missed the New Orleans game on Oct. 17 and stayed behind in Denver. He and his companions were the victims of a drive-by shooting later that night after leaving a strip club. Of the bullets fired at the vehicle, one struck Reynolds in the left arm and another grazed the back of his head. Reynolds had 12 catches for 183 yards and one TD with Denver this season. 5 — For the fifth time in team history, the Broncos returned two interceptions for touchdowns in a game. The previous time Denver had a pair of pick-6s in the same game was Oct. 18, 2018, at Arizona by Todd Davis and Chris Harris Jr. A week off and then a critical home game against Indianapolis on Dec. 15. AP NFL: https://apnews.com/hub/NFLInvestors’ rush into artificial intelligence stocks this year has overplayed the near-term potential of the technology, raising the risks of a “correction” in share prices, asset management powerhouse Vanguard has warned. Joe Davis, Vanguard’s chief economist, said investors have gone too far in their bets on AI’s potential, even if the technology proves to have similar effects to the personal computer, which has revolutionised productivity and jobs since the 1980s. The cautious remarks from the world’s second-largest asset manager add to the fierce debate among investors over whether groups that rode the AI wave are overvalued after huge gains in recent months. “We see roughly 60 to 65% odds that AI is more impactful than the personal computer. The US stock market today is pricing roughly a 90% probability,” said Davis, who leads the US$10 trillion ($17t) asset manager’s investment strategy group. Productivity gains from PCs, and optimism about their potential helped fuel a powerful surge in equities prices in the second half of the late 1990s that culminated in the dotcom bubble bursting in 2000.Andrew Akuchie scores 14 as Rice beats Prairie View A&M 64-46
The first open-source digital twin of the Mcity Test Facility—the University of Michigan's test center for connected and autonomous vehicles and technologies—is now available to the public, giving researchers around the world a new free tool. A is a virtual representation of a physical environment that also exchanges data with that environment, enabling simulation and testing. The new Mcity digital twin is the first open-source digital twin for mobility systems testing, including autonomous driving. It provides a faster, safer, less expensive way to test autonomous and connected vehicle software. Researchers anywhere can use the facility's features—with a variety of road materials, markings, signals and intersections—to test their autonomous algorithms without having to make the trip to Ann Arbor. "This takes our almost 10-year-old track and puts the digital replica directly over it," said Greg Stevens, Mcity's director of research. "That's a living, breathing manifestation of that physical track where people can do mixed reality testing and development." The digital twin works with , an open-source traffic simulator developed by Mcity researchers. It introduces other , such as pedestrians, cyclists and other drivers, and generates safety-critical events like potential collisions. Using traffic behavioral models calibrated with real-world data, it simulates both normal and high-risk driving scenarios. Mobility officials have touted AVs, along with connected vehicles and infrastructure, as a path to safer, more efficient and equitable transportation. Still, a great deal of research remains ahead before the technologies will produce everyday benefits for a large portion of the population. Testing in the real world takes time and money and creates a host of safety issues, but virtual testing can enable control software to demonstrate a high level of safety ahead of that stage. "You can drive millions of miles in your AV in a digital twin built off of a real-world environment before your AV actually touches the real world," said Darian Hogue, an Mcity software engineer who helped develop the digital twin. "With this, we can control all kinds of factors. That includes controlling and manipulating simulated —a factor that is random in the real world. This focuses and accelerates simulated testing." Opened in 2015, the Mcity Test Facility is the world's first purpose-built proving ground for connected and automated vehicles. Its physical features include: Mcity is continuously adding new features, and officials have worked to make the facility and its technologies available to a larger group of researchers. In 2022, development of Mcity's digital infrastructure enabled remote use of the Mcity Test Facility—dubbed Mcity 2.0. This led to the creation of the Mcity digital twin. Mcity officially launched its remote use capabilities in October. Researchers operating from their home bases can test their autonomous algorithms in virtual and mixed reality environments by connecting to Mcity's cloud-based digital infrastructure. Using 5G , they can control physical vehicles and traffic signals on Mcity's test streets and receive real-time data in return—all while protecting proprietary information. "What differentiates the Mcity digital twin is that it supports virtual testing, while remote use involves testing a physical vehicle at our physical test track from a remote location," said Mcity Director Henry Liu, professor of civil and environmental engineering and the Bruce D. Greenshields Collegiate Professor. "As an open-source tool, the Mcity digital twin lowers barriers to use of the by technology developers and researchers. The digital twin could also help developers better prepare for on-site testing at Mcity."How cops use at-home DNA kits to uncover criminals in YOUR family – from Golden State killer to mystery baby deaths

TORONTO — Canada's main stock index lost nearly 250 points Thursday, led by weakness in energy and base metals, while U.S. markets also fell. The S&P/TSX composite index closed down 246.99 points at 25,410.71. In New York, the Dow Jones industrial average was down 234.44 points at 43,914.12. The S&P 500 index was down 32.94 points at 6,051.25, while the Nasdaq composite was down 132.05 points at 19,902.84. “I think the markets had some time to now digest where rates could be going into the near term,” said Adelaide Chiu, portfolio manager, vice-president and head of responsible investing at NEI Investments. On Wednesday, the Bank of Canada announced an outsized half-percentage point interest rate cut and signalled it would slow the pace of cuts going forward. “With the policy rate now substantially lower, we anticipate a more gradual approach to monetary policy if the economy evolves broadly as expected," said Bank of Canada governor Tiff Macklem. And in the U.S., the monthly report on consumer inflation came in largely as expected, helping set the stage for a quarter-point cut by the U.S. Federal Reserve next week. Globally, interest rate cuts are moderating as inflation reaches targets, Chiu said. On Thursday, the European Central Bank cut rates by a quarter of a percentage point while the Swiss National Bank cut by half a percentage point. A year ago, market watchers couldn’t have predicted just how much equities would rise in 2024, said Chiu. “Earnings growth itself has been quite modest, but the market has done very well,” she said. “It’s really a movement of the interest rates that has really impacted valuations for a lot of these companies in the market.” Now, the news is largely focused on the incoming U.S. president and whether his threatened tariffs will come to pass, Chiu said. The Canadian dollar traded for 70.48 cents US compared with 70.65 cents US on Wednesday. The January crude oil contract was down 27 cents at US$70.02 per barrel and the January natural gas contract was up eight cents at US$3.46 per mmBTU. The February gold contract was down US$47.30 at US$2,709.40 an ounce and the March copper contract was down a penny at US$4.20 a pound. -- With files from The Associated Press This report by The Canadian Press was first published Dec. 12, 2024. The Detroit Lions picked up a nice 34-17 divisional victory over the Chicago Bears in Week 16, as Dan Campbell's squad bounced back after a Week 15 defeat to the Buffalo Bills and improved their road record to 7-0. Though the Lions got back in the win column on Sunday, the team has yet to secure the NFC North title or the No.1 seed in the conference. That's because the Minnesota Vikings continue to win games, as the Vikings notched a 27-24 victory over the Seattle Seahawks in Week 16. Entering Week 17, the Lions and Vikings boast the same record at 13-2, and there's a chance Detroit and Minnesota's Week 18 matchup will be for the division crown and the No.1 seed in the NFC. The Vikings will host the Green Bay Packers at U.S. Bank Stadium on Sunday in Week 17, and if Kevin O'Connell's squad wins that game, the Lions won't be able to clinch the division or the No.1 seed and will have to wait until they play Minnesota in Week 18. The Lions don't play until Monday Night in Week 17, as the team will travel to Levi's Stadium to face off against the San Francisco 49ers. Campbell and his group will know the results of the Packers vs. Vikings game before their Monday Night contest versus the 49ers, but Dan Campbell had an emphatic answer about the possibility of the Lions resting starters versus San Francisco if Minnesota defeats Green Bay on Sunday. "I'll make this easy for everybody that way all the critics can jump out and start attacking, but that way you don't have to debate them anymore," Campbell said. "We're bringing everything we got to this game and we are playing, I don't care what it looks like and where it's at and who's this, who's that. We're going out to play and win this game, out on the West Coast. So there you go." If the Vikings beat the Packers in Week 17 — before Detroit’s MNF game vs. the 49ers — the Lions can’t clinch the division or the No. 1 seed until they play Minnesota in Week 18. Don’t expect Dan Campbell to rest his starters. “We’re bringing everything we’ve got to this game.” pic.twitter.com/VgJo9otoDz Though some will urge the Lions to rest their starters if they can't clinch the division and the No.1 seed versus the 49ers in Week 17 due to a potential Vikings win over the Packers, Dan Campbell has made up his mind. The former NFL tight end has built a culture centered around grit and perseverance in Detroit, and resting starters, even if the game doesn't mean much, isn't in his DNA. The Lions and Vikings are the top two contenders to land the NFC's No.1 seed, but the Philadelphia Eagles are also still mathematically in the race despite losing to the Washington Commanders in Week 16. Below is a tweet from Jeff Kerr of CBS Sports that shows Philadelphia's path to the No.1 seed in the NFC. The #Eagles are still in race for the No. 1 seed even with #Vikings and #Lions winning. Japan’s factory output fell for the first time in three months in November due to softening overseas demand, although contracted at a slower-than-expected pace from the previous month, government data showed on Friday. fell 2.3% in November from the previous month, data released by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) on Monday showed, missing a median market forecast for a 3.4% fall, and compared with a 2.8% rise in October. Manufacturers surveyed by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry expect seasonally adjusted output to rise 2.1% and 1.3% in December, and January 2025 respectively. Separate data showed Japanese rose 2.8% in November from a year earlier, beating expectations for growth of 1.5%. Today’s figures will be closely analyzed for their implications on the Bank of Japan’s decisions, especially as policymakers monitor domestic resilience against global economic headwinds and political uncertainties. The Bank of Japan (BOJ) is expected to hike its policy rate by 25 basis points at an upcoming meeting in January, after it kept rates unchanged this month. Earlier this week, BOJ Governor Kazuo Ueda said that the economy is expected to make progress toward sustainably reaching the central bank’s 2% inflation target next year, hinting that an interest rate hike could be approaching. Source: Investing.comBrighton & Hove Albion Women and Tottenham Hotspur Women will be in action for the final time in 2024 when they lock horns at the Broadfield Stadium on Sunday. The Seagulls are sitting in fifth spot in the Women's Super League table , while Spurs are six points further back in sixth position. Last weekend, Brighton dropped from third to fifth position after falling to a 4-2 defeat in their away meeting with reigning WSL champions Chelsea. Jelena Cankovic scored against her former club to have the deficit following two Chelsea goals, before Kiko Seike found the net to set up an exciting finale after Johanna Rytting Kaneryd had restored her team's two-goal cushion. Unfortunately for the Seagulls, their hopes of salvaging a point were quashed by Sjoeke Nusken 's stoppage-time effort, condemning them to their third away defeat of the season. While they would have been disappointed with the defeat, Brighton will still be pleased with their overall efforts this season, having collected 16 points from nine league matches, leaving them just three points adrift of their total points tally from the 2023-24 campaign. The Seagulls have also enjoyed success in the Women's League Cup, including a dominant 6-2 home win over Bristol City on Wednesday to seal top spot in their group and a place in the quarter-finals. They will now turn their focus back to league action, with Brighton looking to maintain their unbeaten home record in the WSL after winning four and drawing one of their five home games in the top flight this season. Like their hosts, Spurs will also be in the Women's League Cup quarter-finals after they beat Crystal Palace in midweek to seal top spot in Group E. Matilda Vinberg and Araya Dennis grabbed a goal apiece in the second half to fire Robert Vilahamn 's side to a 2-0 away victory. That result represented a third consecutive win in all competitions after Spurs previously beat Aston Villa and Everton in the Women's League Cup and WSL respectively. Tottenham claimed a 2-1 victory over the Toffees last weekend to make it three wins in five league games - a significant contrast to their poor form on the road. In fact, Spurs are one of five teams yet to win a WSL away game this season, having taken just one point from their four away league matches in 2024-25. Tottenham have shipped more away goals than any other team in the WSL with 14 goals conceded, highlighting a key area for improvement if they are to spark an upturn in fortunes on their travels. Brighton boss Dario Vidosic is unable to call upon the injured quartet of Maria Thorisdottir , Maisie Symonds , Aisha Masaka and Fran Kirby . After making some changes in midweek, Vidosic could recall Sophie Baggaley , Cankovic and Seike for Saturday's league fixture. Nikita Parris will also come back into the starting lineup, with the striker looking to add to the five competitive goals she has scored this season. As for the visitors, Ella Morris recently joined Kit Graham on the sidelines after she sustained a knee injury while away with the England Under-23 squad. Goalkeeper Rebecca Spencer will have to be assessed after being absent from the last two matchday squads due to illness. Maite Oroz could make her first league start since returning from injury after gaining valuable minutes in Tottenham's last two matches. Brighton & Hove Albion Women possible starting lineup: Baggaley; McLauchlan, Bergsvand, Carabali; Olislagers, Cankovic, Losada, Pattison; Seike, Vilamala; Parris Tottenham Hotspur Women possible starting lineup: Heeps; Neville, Hunt, Bartrip, Nilden; Oroz, Summanen; Raso, Spence, Naz; England Brighton have won four of their five home league games this season, and while they will be tested by Tottenham this weekend, we think they will make full use of home advantage to end the calendar year with a narrow victory. ( ) is continuing to shine as one of the top-performing in 2024, extending its impressive streak of outperforming the broader market for the sixth consecutive year. With a staggering 48% year-to-date gain, DOL stock currently trades at $141.67 per share, far outpacing the ’s 18.6% rise. In recent years, the company’s strong , growing footprint, and ability to attract consumers even in challenging economic conditions have helped it maintain consistent growth and reward investors handsomely. But where will Dollarama stock be in three years? In this article, let’s explore Dollarama’s growth potential, key factors driving its performance, and what investors can expect over the next three years. Strong earnings growth track record Dollarama is known for consistently delivering strong earnings growth, and the recent financial results showed the continuation of this trend. The company reported a 5.7% YoY (year-over-year) increase in sales to $1.56 billion with the help of a 3.3% increase in its comparable store sales, reflecting sustained demand for its consumable products. However, a slight decrease in its average transaction size suggested that consumers are becoming cautious with spending amid economic pressures. Despite these challenges, Dollarama’s ability to cater to diverse income groups with affordable products keeps its customer base loyal. With this, the Canadian discount retailer’s revenue has gone up 8.2% YoY over the last 12 months, which helped it achieve over 18% adjusted earnings growth. This consistent growth is one of the key reasons why Dollarama stock is continuing to outperform the broader market. Focus on growth initiatives Besides its impressive financial performance, Dollarama is continuing to focus on long-term growth initiatives to scale up its operations. The company recently updated its long-term Canadian store target, increasing it from 2,000 stores by 2031 to 2,200 stores by 2034. This aggressive expansion plan reflects Dollarama’s confidence in its business model and the growth potential of value-focused retail in Canada. In addition, the company is also making investments to optimize its logistics operations. Notably, Dollarama plans to develop a new logistics hub in Calgary, Alberta, which is expected to be operational by 2027. This hub will complement its existing centralized distribution centre in Montreal and create a two-node logistics system that will improve efficiency and reduce costs. What investors can expect in three years Looking ahead, Dollarama’s strong financial growth trend is likely to continue as it focuses on store network expansion and improved logistics infrastructure. Also, its ability to attract budget-conscious consumers could help the company post steady earnings growth. We also shouldn’t forget that Dollarama’s ability to adapt and thrive in challenging economic environments makes it a very safe investment, especially for long-term investors. Even if inflation persists and consumer spending remains cautious, Dollarama’s affordable product offerings could continue to draw budget-conscious shoppers. While predicting the exact stock price is nearly impossible, Dollarama’s strategic initiatives and proven track record suggest it has the potential to continue outperforming the market index by a big margin in the years to come.
Their ages vary. But a conspicuous handful of filmmaking lions in winter, or let’s say late autumn, have given us new reasons to be grateful for their work over the decades — even for the work that didn’t quite work. Which, yes, sounds like ingratitude. But do we even want more conventional or better-behaved work from talents such as Francis Ford Coppola? Even if we’re talking about “Megalopolis” ? If Clint Eastwood’s “Juror #2” gave audiences a less morally complicated courtroom drama, would that have mattered, given Warner Bros.’ butt-headed decision to plop it in less than three dozen movie theaters in the U.S.? Coppola is 85. Eastwood is 94. Paul Schrader, whose latest film “Oh, Canada” arrives this week and is well worth seeking out, is a mere 78. Based on the 2021 Russell Banks novel “Foregone,” “Oh, Canada” is the story of a documentary filmmaker, played by Richard Gere, being interviewed near the end of his cancer-shrouded final days. In the Montreal home he shares with his wife and creative partner, played by Uma Thurman, he consents to the interview by two former students of his. Gere’s character, Leonard Fife, has no little contempt for these two, whom he calls “Mr. and Mrs. Ken Burns of Canada” with subtle disdain. As we learn over the artful dodges and layers of past and present, events imagined and/or real, Fife treats the interview as a final confession from a guarded and deceptive soul. He’s also a hero to everyone in the room, famous for his anti-Vietnam war political activism, and for the Frederick Wiseman-like inflection of his own films’ interview techniques. The real-life filmmaker name-checked in “Oh, Canada” is documentarian Errol Morris, whose straight-to-the-lens framing of interview subjects was made possible by his Interrotron device. In Schrader’s adaptation, Fife doesn’t want the nominal director (Michael Imperioli, a nicely finessed embodiment of a second-rate talent with first-rate airs) in his eyeline. Rather, as he struggles with hazy, self-incriminating memories of affairs, marriages, one-offs with a friend’s wife and a tense, brief reunion with the son he never knew, Fife wants only his wife, Emma — his former Goddard College student — in this metaphoric confessional. Schrader and his editor Benjamin Rodriguez Jr. treat the memories as on-screen flashbacks spanning from 1968 to 2023. At times, Gere and Thurman appear as their decades-young selves, without any attempt to de-age them, digitally or otherwise. (Thank god, I kind of hate that stuff in any circumstance.) In other sequences from Fife’s past, Jacob Elordi portrays Fife, with sly and convincing behavioral details linking his performance to Gere’s persona. We hear frequent voiceovers spoken by Gere about having ruined his life by age 24, at least spiritually or morally. Banks’ novel is no less devoted to a dying man’s addled but ardent attempt to come clean and own up to what has terrified him the most in the mess and joy of living: Honesty. Love. Commitment. There are elements of “Oh, Canada” that soften Banks’ conception of Fife, from the parentage of Fife’s abandoned son to the specific qualities of Gere’s performance. It has been 44 years since Gere teamed with Schrader on “American Gigolo,” a movie made by a very different filmmaker with very different preoccupations of hetero male hollowness. It’s also clearly the same director at work, I think. And Gere remains a unique camera object, with a stunning mastery of filling a close-up with an unblinking stillness conveying feelings easier left behind. The musical score is pretty watery, and with Schrader you always get a few lines of tortured rhetoric interrupting the good stuff. In the end, “Oh, Canada” has an extraordinarily simple idea at its core: That of a man with a movie camera, most of his life, now on the other side of the lens. Not easy. “I can’t tell the truth unless that camera’s on!” he barks at one point. I don’t think the line from the novel made it into Schrader’s script, but it too sums up this lion-in-winter feeling of truth without triumphal Hollywood catharsis. The interview, Banks wrote, is one’s man’s “last chance to stop lying.” It’s also a “final prayer,” dramatized by the Calvinist-to-the-bone filmmaker who made sure to include that phrase in his latest devotion to final prayers and missions of redemption. “Oh, Canada” — 3 stars (out of 4) No MPA rating (some language and sexual material) Running time: 1:34 How to watch: Opens in theaters Dec. 13, running 1in Chicago Dec. 13-19 at the Gene Siskel Film Center, 164 N. (Also Read: Gal Gadot's casting as Evil Stepmother in Snow White receives backlash, netizens say ‘she can’t act to save her life' ) What Gal Gadot said Gal took to her social media handles on Monday morning and shared a picture from the hospital, in which she's looking at her newborn daughter who's resting in her arms, while sipping black coffee from the other hand. She wrote in the caption, “This year has been one of profound challenges and deep reflections, and I’ve wrestled with how, or even if, to share a personal story. At the end, I decided to let my heart guide me. Perhaps this is my way of processing everything, of pulling back the curtain on the fragile reality behind the curated moments we share on social media. Most of all, I hope that by sharing, I can raise awareness and support others who may face something similar.” “In February, during my eighth month of pregnancy, I was diagnosed with a massive blood clot in my brain. For weeks, I had endured excruciating headaches that confined me to bed, until I finally underwent an MRI that revealed the terrifying truth. In one moment, my family and I were faced with how fragile life can be. It was a stark reminder of how quickly everything can change, and in the midst of a difficult year, all I wanted was to hold on and live,” she narrated. "We rushed to the hospital, and within hours, I underwent emergency surgery. My daughter, Ori, was born during that moment of uncertainty and fear. Her name, meaning ‘my light,’ wasn’t chosen by chance. Before the surgery, I told Jaron that when our daughter arrived, she would be the light waiting for me at the end of this tunnel. Thanks to an extraordinary team of doctors at @cedarssinai and weeks of dedicated care, I made it through and began the road to recovery. Today, I am fully healed and filled with gratitude for the life I’ve been given back," Gal added. “The journey has taught me so much. First, it’s vital to listen to our bodies and trust what it’s telling us. Pain, discomfort, or even subtle changes often carry deeper meaning, and being attuned to your body can be life saving. Second, awareness matters. I had no idea that 3 in 100,000 pregnant women in the 30s+ age group are diagnosed with CVT (develop a blood clot in the brain) . It’s so important to identify early because it’s treatable. While rare, it’s a possibility, and knowing it exists is the first step to addressing it. Sharing this is not meant to frighten anyone but to empower. If even one person feels compelled to take action for their health because of this story, it will have been worth sharing,” concluded Gal. By SAMY MAGDY CAIRO — Famine is spreading in Sudan due to a war between the military and a notorious paramilitary group that has devastated the country and created the world’s largest displacement crisis, a global hunger monitoring group said Tuesday. The Integrated Food Security Phase Classification, or IPC, said it detected famine in five areas, including in Sudan’s largest displacement camp, Zamzam , in North Darfur province, where famine was found for the first time in August. The report said the war has triggered unprecedented mass displacement and a collapsing economy. It said hostilities can result in farmers abandoning their crops, looting and stock destruction. (AP Photo/Marwan Ali, File) Along with the Zamzam camp, which has more than 400,000 people, famine was also detected in two other camps for displaced people, Abu Shouk and al-Salam in North Darfur, and the Western Nuba Mountains, the IPC report said. Five other areas in North Darfur are projected “with reasonable evidence” to experience famine in the next six months, including el-Fasher, the provincial capital of North Darfur, it said. Seventeen areas in the Nuba Mountains and the northern and southern areas of Darfur are at risk of famine, it added. The report also said some areas in the capital, Khartoum, and the east-central province of Gezira “may be experiencing” famine-like conditions. It said experts were unable to confirm whether famine threshold has been surpassed due to lack of data. “It is not merely a lack of food but a profound breakdown of health, livelihoods and social structures, leaving entire communities in a state of desperation,” it said. There is widespread hunger, with food in markets scarce and prices high. Aid groups say they struggle to reach the most vulnerable as warring parties limit access, especially in North Darfur province. Ahead of the IPC’s report, Sudan’s government said it had suspended its participation in the global monitoring system, according to a senior United Nations official with knowledge of the move. In a letter dated Dec. 23, Agriculture Minister Abu Baker al-Beshri accused the IPC of “issuing unreliable reports that undermine Sudan’s sovereignty and dignity,” said the U.N. official, who spoke in condition of anonymity to discuss the letter. Sudan’s 20-month war has killed more than than 24,000 people and driven over 14 million people — about 30% of the population — from their homes, according to the United Nations. An estimated 3.2 million Sudanese have crossed into neighboring countries including Chad, Egypt and South Sudan. The war began in April 2023 when tensions between its military and paramilitary Rapid Support Forces exploded into fighting in Khartoum before spreading to other areas. The conflict has been marked by atrocities including ethnically motivated killing and rape, according to the U.N. and rights groups. The International Criminal Court is investigating alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity. Dervla Cleary, a senior emergency and rehabilitation officer at the U.N.’s Food and Agriculture Organization, said 638,000 people are experiencing famine. “The situation in Sudan is just awful. It is unacceptable in a world like today,” she said. The IPC report called for a ceasefire, calling it the only way to reduce the risk of famine spreading further.” Sudan is the third country where famine was declared in the past 15 years, along with South Sudan and Somalia. The IPC comprises more than a dozen U.N. agencies, aid groups and governments that use its monitoring as a global reference for analysis of food and nutrition crises. The organization has also warned that large parts of Gaza’s Palestinian population face the threat of famine.
While some countries like Japan have histories dating back to before the time of Christ, several were only founded in recent decades - and six of them are in Europe. South Sudan is the world's most recently founded country, having been formally established on July 9th, 2011. It was officially recognised as an independent nation following a 2005 agreement to end a decades-long civil war , with the 10 most southern states breaking away from Sudan to form South Sudan. The second-youngest is Kosovo in Southeastern Europe, having declared independence from Serbia in February 2008, as per Forbes . The country's independence has so far being recognised by 104 nations around the globe, including the UK, out of 193. Two years prior, the nearby State Union of Serbia and Montenegro split to form the separate states of Serbia and Montenegro in June 2006. Timor Leste, also known as East Timor, is the fifth youngest nation, having officially become an independent nation on May 20, 2002 . Its establishment followed decades of hardship. After Portuguese colonial rule ended in 1975, Indonesia claimed the territory for itself and brutally suppressed the country's independence movement, as per BBC News ' profile of the state. After decades of struggle, the UN took over territory's administration and supervised its move to independence. Next up is tiny Pacific island nation of Palau, which until relatively recently was part of the United Nations Trust Territory of the Pacific, administered by the US following the Second World War, as per the United States Department of State website . The country began the process of independence in 1978, gaining it in 1994. Eritrea, a northeast African nation on the Red Sea coast is the seventh youngest nation in the world. The country, which has a population of around 3.7 million formally gained its independence from neighbouring Ethiopia in 1993, following a decades-long war. The eighth and ninth youngest nations, the Czech Republic and Slovakia, became independent nations on the same day, January 1, 1993. What had formally been Czechoslovakia split into two countries following the dissolution of the Czechoslovak federation. According to the Pew Research Centre, "In addition to their differences over religion and other issues, Czechs and Slovaks differ ethnically and culturally. "These as well as political, economic and other reasons led Slovakian political leaders to push to break away from Czechoslovakia", following the collapse of the Communism in the late 1980s. Finally, Bosnia and Herzegovina officially came into being on March 3rd, 1992, becoming the final part of former Yugoslavia to proclaim independence, as per The Telegraph . The state of Maryland is set to gain control of the DC Air National Guard fighter squadron as part of a major deal that will see the nation’s capital take over the site of RFK stadium. The Air Force approved the transfer of the 121st Fighter Squadron from Washington, DC, to the Maryland Air National Guard, according to spokeswoman Ann Stefanek. Maryland currently flies A-10 attack aircraft, but those are scheduled for divestment from the Air Force next year, according to the governor’s office. The new development means the Maryland Air National Guard will soon fly F-16 fighter jets, a more advanced aircraft that serves as one of the mainstays of the Air Force’s fleet. The DC Air National Guard also defends the National Capital Region, which is some of the most sensitive airspace in the country. The fighter wing has a round-the-clock alert force as part of its mission. By contrast, the Maryland Air National Guard’s aging A-10 aircraft were primarily used in an overseas attack role when deployed. The Maryland unit was supposed to transition into a cyber role, but the transfer of control of the fighter squadron will maintain the unit’s flying mission. “The men and women of the Maryland Air National Guard are some of the finest and most experienced pilots in the world. In partnership with our congressional delegation and federal partners, we have advocated vigorously to maintain Maryland’s flying mission, both in the interest of national security and to continue the proud tradition that Maryland plays in defending our country,” Democratic Gov. Wes Moore said in a joint statement with the state’s senators on Monday. The transfer of the fighter squadron was a critical part of a complex deal that allows Washington, DC, to take over the land around RFK stadium, which could bring the NFL back to the nation’s capital, while also providing Maryland with funding to rebuild the Francis Scott Key Bridge . The deal was at risk of collapse last week when a provision to transfer the stadium land to DC was stripped from a government funding package following opposition from President-elect Donald Trump and billionaire Elon Musk. But in a surprise move early Saturday morning, the Senate unanimously passed a bill giving DC control of the land. The Robert F. Kennedy Memorial Stadium Campus Revitalization Act now awaits President Joe Biden’s signature after it passed the House earlier this year. The Washington Commanders football team has played at Northwest Stadium, formerly known as FedEx Field, in Landover, Maryland, since 1997. The franchise previously played at RFK Stadium from 1961 until 1996. Maryland Air National Guard Brig. Gen. Drew Dougherty called the deal an “historic moment” for the unit. “Over the past few years, we have been resolute on our commitment to securing a future flying mission. This transition is the first step in delivering a path where we can maintain our highly experienced pilots and maintainers, positions that are critically manned across the total force, while still keeping Maryland at the forefront of cyber operation,” Dougherty said in a statement. Details about the timeline and the transition of the fighters from DC to Maryland “will be announced at a later date,” said Stefanek.

The British Columbia Hockey League hosted a special board of governors meeting this week to discuss ways to deal with the recent NCAA eligibility change, but one thing they didn't discuss was rejoining Hockey Canada. The league has seen a number of players depart the league this month for the Canadian Hockey League – or other major junior leagues – due to the NCAA's ruling on Nov. 7 that players suiting up in any of the three CHL leagues could continue on at the NCAA level. Prior to that decision, those who played in the CHL were not able to play at the NCAA level due to those leagues being considered semi-professional. The BCHL left Hockey Canada in 2023 and became an independent league. The mission at that time was to create a world-class junior league for players seeking NCAA and U Sports scholarships. It allowed the BCHL to recruit from a larger pool of players, as under Hockey Canada they could not recruit as heavily from other provinces and parts of the world. The BCHL also stated in 2023 that all player fees would be eliminated by the 2024-25 season. The BCHL's Board of Governors met on Wednesday to discuss league strategic planning in the ever-changing junior hockey landscape. "We are committed to providing the best path for young athletes to develop into NCAA Division I hockey players." DETAILS: According to Jesse Adamson, the director of communications for the BCHL, discussions about linking back with Hockey Canada are not on the table. "Being an independent league puts us in a much better situation to handle this change as it gives our league the autonomy to make regulation changes to adapt to the new landscape," he told Black Press Media. "Our governors are still very happy with the decision to become independent." The BCHL issed a press release on Friday morning (Nov. 22), stating that only a small percentage of players have left the league and other players have been brought in to replace them. They also reiterated that the BCHL has always been about player choice. Unlike the CHL, the BCHL does not hold a draft or tell players where to play. Players are recruited and can choose their own destination from the start of their junior hockey career. "There’s no doubt that this rule change has altered the landscape of junior hockey, but as our league has always done, we will adapt to the new regulations and continue to thrive,” stated BCHL commissioner Steven Cocker. "We will always be in favour of athletes doing what they think is best for their development.” BCHL board chairman Richard Murphy said he believes that, despite the changing landscape, the BCHL is still the best path for players to develop into NCAA Division I hockey players. He added that the league will continue to produce college-bound athletes for years to come. The release stated that the BCHL’s mandate going forward remains: unity and growth, players' choice, academics, independence, and meeting the needs of its athletes and of NCAA Division I programs. following the meeting with more information. The FAQ states that the league has had multiple meetings with NCAA Division I programs and conferences and they all feel that this decision will not make the BCHL irrelevant. The FAQ added that the BCHL's high academic standards also makes players from the league more easy to recruit into the NCAA. , with the West Kelowna Warriors and Penticton Vees both losing two. The Vees put out a statement on Friday (Nov. 22) after losing forward Casey Brown and defenceman Julien Wasmer to the CHL. “Casey came to us with a personal issue. He felt being closer to his family would be best and we fully support and respect his decision. We wish him all the best in Moose Jaw," said Fred Harbinson, Vees president, general manager and head coach "We are a few weeks away from getting two 20-year-old defencemen back from injury, and coupled with the outstanding play of our two young defencemen, Julien understood his role was going to be reduced. He looked for an opportunity with another team, rather than compete for a more favourable spot on our roster." Our roster now sits at 23 players after the departures of Casey Brown and Julien Wasmer. Click the link below for a statement from President, General Manager & Head Coach Fred Harbinson. Other players who have moved on since the decision include: Lukas McCloskey (Vernon Vipers), Robin Benoit (Sherwood Park Crusaders), Linden Burrett (Cowichan Valley Capitals), Thomas Belzil (Powell River Kings) and Liam Beamish (Salmon Arm Silverbacks).Ottawa Public Health is warning residents about a possible risk of exposure to hepatitis A at a local Tim Hortons in the city's south end. OPH says it is investigating a confirmed case of hepatitis A in an employee at the Tim Hortons at 372 Hunt Club Rd. While the risk of exposure is described as "very low", OPH recommends all customers who ate or drank any products from this location between Nov. 15 and Dec. 8 to monitor for symptoms of hepatitis A for 50 days. OPH says the risk is considered very low because of the shop's proper attention to hygiene and safe food preparation. "Any patron who experiences fever, loss of appetite, nausea, abdominal pain, feeling generally unwell (malaise), yellow skin and eyes (jaundice), pale stools or dark urine should seek medical assessment," a news release said. Tim Hortons said in a statement the owner is working with officials and it is believed the initial infection was contracted outside the country. "Guests’ health and safety is our top priority. While Ottawa Public Health says the risk to the public is “very low,” the restaurant owner continues to work closely with officials and is following all their guidance. The investigation suggests that the illness was contracted outside the restaurant, most likely while the individual was on vacation outside the country," a spokesperson said. Hepatitis A is a contagious virus that affects the liver. It can range from a mild illness lasting a few weeks to a severe illness that lasts months. Symptoms of hepatitis A appear from 15 to 50 days after coming in contact with the virus, but most often occur within 30 days, OPH says. Children may not show any symptoms. A blood test is required to determine if someone has contracted hepatitis A. There is no medication to treat hepatitis A. OPH says most people are sick for about one to two weeks and then recover, while others may develop more serious illness. After recovering from the illness, a person is considered immune and protected against hepatitis A for life. Hepatitis A typically spreads via contaminated food or water, but it can also spread through sex or by being in close contact with a person who is infected, even if that person has no signs or symptoms of the infection. More information about hepatitis A is available on Ottawa Public Health's website. Shopping Trends The Shopping Trends team is independent of the journalists at CTV News. Former U.S. President Jimmy Carter has died. He was 100 years old and had spent more than a year in hospice care. The Georgia peanut farmer served one turbulent term in the White House before building a reputation as a global humanitarian and champion of democracy. He defeated President Gerald Ford in 1976 promising to restore trust in government but lost to Ronald Reagan four years later amid soaring inflation, gas station lines and the Iran hostage crisis. He and his wife, Rosalynn Carter, then formed The Carter Center, and he earned a Nobel Peace Prize while making himself the most active and internationally engaged of former presidents. The Carter Center said the former president died Sunday afternoon in Plains, Georgia. Contributing: Associated PressThe Fort Monroe Authority on Thursday unanimously selected Scott Martin to be its new chief executive officer — ending a nationwide search that has been underway since the spring. Martin currently serves as the administrator of Chattanooga Tennessee Parks & Outdoors and was previously the executive director of the River Heritage Conservancy in Jeffersonville, Indiana. He was voted in during a Board of Trustees meeting and will begin work in the new role in January. Martin thanked the board for the opportunity and pledged to do his best. “You have no idea where the Lord’s going to take you, but everything happens for a reason, and I just feel overwhelmingly blessed and honored,” he said. “And I’d be lying if I didn’t say a little scared and intimidated by the awesome responsibility as well.” Martin is replacing previous CEO Glenn Oder, who retired on Oct. 1. The Fort Monroe Authority is a political subdivision that oversees development on the state’s property at the fort, which ceased to operate as an Army base in 2011. Martin has more than 20 years of senior leadership experience across various agencies. In Chattanooga, he led a team that launched a collaborative master plan process for the city’s largest urban park and a refresh of the Chattanooga Riverfront, and completed the city’s first comprehensive Parks & Outdoors plan in more than 25 years. According to a news release, he served on a collaborative private/public partnership team that brought $8.4 million in philanthropic gifts and public grants to the park system and system reinvestments. He also served as the parks director for 21st Century Parks, Inc. in Louisville, Kentucky, where he helped plan and program a new 4,000-acre, $130 million nonprofit-run public park system that hosts more than 3 million annual visitors. He earned a Bachelor’s degree in political science and a Master’s degree in public administration from Boise State University. Salary information for Martin was not immediately available Thursday. After Oder announced his plans to retire in late March , the authority formed a CEO Search Committee to find a new, permanent CEO and hired search firm Korn Ferry to assist in the process. Chief Operating Officer John K. Hutcheson is serving as CEO in an interim capacity until Martin takes over. Authority board member John Reynolds said Korn Ferry contacted more than 250 people for the position in a nationwide search and did an in-depth screening of 23 people. The firm presented a list of 12 candidates to the search committee, which conducted interviews and selected Martin. “He understands the power of a wonderful, internationally significant place to affect how a city can improve itself with the right partnerships,” Reynolds said. “He understands people, and he’s got a reputation as a good manager.” Martin said he’s “following a legend,” and his first priority is to learn from people who have been working at the Fort Monroe site, learn more about its history, and to try to assess what its future should look like. “I think I’m going to listen to the board and look for their guidance, and the folks that have been around a lot longer than me, and say, ‘What part of the 2012 plan still works? What part of the 2012 plan needs to change?’ COVID changed everything, what did it change here for how the community wants to live and breathe and deal with it? How does climate change impact this? How does science? All that sort of stuff has to enter the mix, and I’m there to learn initially and help the team.” Josh Janney, joshua.janney@virginiamedia.com Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) Click to share on X (Opens in new window) Most Popular Court documents: 3-year-old grabbed dad’s gun off kitchen counter and accidentally shot himself Court documents: 3-year-old grabbed dad’s gun off kitchen counter and accidentally shot himself Virginia Beach man accused of striking state trooper with car after pursuit Virginia Beach man accused of striking state trooper with car after pursuit Entertainment venue Uptown Alley no longer coming to Williamsburg Entertainment venue Uptown Alley no longer coming to Williamsburg Ex-student pleads guilty to fatally shooting 3 University of Virginia football players in 2022 Ex-student pleads guilty to fatally shooting 3 University of Virginia football players in 2022 Virginia’s withdrawal from RGGI was ‘unlawful,’ judge rules Virginia’s withdrawal from RGGI was ‘unlawful,’ judge rules Man tried to rob Virginia Beach 7-Eleven with knife, officials say, before police shot him Man tried to rob Virginia Beach 7-Eleven with knife, officials say, before police shot him Gaetz withdraws as Trump’s pick for attorney general, averting confirmation battle in the Senate Gaetz withdraws as Trump’s pick for attorney general, averting confirmation battle in the Senate 2 school buses involved in crash in James City County. Cournoyer tapped as lieutenant governor
During the 2024 Global Governance Summit in Manila organized by the Institute of Corporate Directors (ICD), it was inevitable to have discussions on the grim reality that the Philippines lingers with a pervading risk environment that continues to exacerbate its arduous task towards achieving our dream of becoming a high-level economy by 2046, our centennial year celebrating 100 years of Philippine independence. According to the World Bank, a high level economy is currently pegged at US$14,005. Assuming we average a respectable 6 percent annual growth rate and based on today’s per capita of $4,200, per capita shall hover at $13,500 by 2046 — nominal at that and still stuck at mid-level economic status. This is alarming and embarrassing. More importantly, millions of Filipinos will continue to face poverty, hunger, social inequality and unemployment for an extended amount of time, not to mention the lost opportunities that we as a decent society deserve and pray for. We have to shape up fast. If India and Vietnam have excelled towards 8 percent annual economic growth in 2024, surely we can do the same through long term sustainable growth but not just in traditional manufacturing, tourism, information technology, foreign remittances, trade and investments but quite necessary to act also in highly underdeveloped but extremely high potential industries such as reforestation and responsible mining. Yes, we have to shape up fast not just in a few key industries but across the board! A reflection of industry performance could be traced on our capital markets. According to Dr. Jess Estanislao, our stock market should be more inclusive and must grow considerably, as it transforms itself in line with the further professionalization and modernization of our ASEAN counterparts. The main difference, as our Philippine Stock Exchange (PSE) now ranks 5th among the ASEAN in terms of market capitalization, is the sheer number of listed companies stuck at less than 300. Further to this, the market capitalization of top publicly-listed Philippine companies far outweigh the rest of the bourse. Unlike our ASEAN neighbors, the stock exchanges are truly representative of a true market rather than a boutique list of players that seemingly pervades the PSE. Fortunately, the PSE is constantly upgrading and its management has identified its priorities. Let us support our beloved PSE in our joint aspirations for a more formidable Philippine stock exchange. As of November 2024, the total market capitalization of the PSE hovers around US$340 billion (CEIC), representing a modest share of the global market. This figure pales in comparison to traditional Asian powerhouses like Japan, with over US$6 trillion in market capitalization, and emerging markets such as India, with over US$3.5 trillion. The gap is widening. There have been conclusions that it is just too expensive to list, thus making this quite restrictive. Further to this would be the avoidance of the responsibility and costs involved for full disclosures — a short term investment no doubt, however, quite necessary to consider for long term strategic plans for enterprises, particularly as part of a conglomerate design for corporate sustainability. Another contributing factor is the concentration of family-owned businesses in the Philippines, many of which are dissuaded by public listing due to concerns over transparency and the costs of compliance... but that would be another full article by itself. Looking ahead To bridge the gap with global standards, the Philippines must prioritize reforms that promote inclusivity, resilience and sustainability. Key focus areas include: Expanding market participation: Encouraging more companies to go public through incentives and capacity-building programs for SMEs. Enhancing regulatory enforcement: Strengthening the capacity of regulators to monitor compliance and impose sanctions for violations. Integrating strategic governance and sustainability principles: Supporting businesses and organizations in adopting frameworks through the highest levels of excellence in good governance practices. Promoting diversity, equality and inclusiveness: Addressing imbalances in corporate leadership to align with global trends of inclusivity. Digital transformation: Leveraging technology to improve transparency, streamline compliance processes, and enhance stakeholder engagement. Until then..
In the wake of a successful effort to kill a year-end spending bill and replace it with more limited legislation to keep the government open, Elon Musk declared victory on X (formerly Twitter), the social media platform he owns: “Your actions turned a bill that weighed pounds into a bill that weighed ounces!” he crowed. “You are the media now. VOX POPULI VOX DEI.” The stopgap funding measure will largely delay major spending decisions until after Donald Trump’s inauguration, keep the government open through the holidays and at least temporarily delay the most indefensible spending that was crammed into the scale-tipping bill. But those who believe the indefensible spending won’t end up back in the budget are endearingly optimistic. The most interesting political takeaway from the drama is that the Republican Party now has two masters with different goals. Musk’s stated mission was to impose fiscal restraint and greater efficiency on government (though his unstated motives are a matter of speculation). Trump’s objective was to avoid the hassles of a debate over raising the government borrowing limit early in his term, freeing him to rack up more debt through spending and tax cuts. Based purely on the political result, Musk won and Trump lost. While the bill does spend less than the earlier version, it does not raise the debt ceiling. A case can be made for both goals. I think Musk is indisputably correct about the need to cut spending. And although I don’t want Trump to be able to amass more debt, fights over the borrowing limit are reckless because they put the full faith and credit of the United States in doubt. The challenge for Republican legislators is that they are caught between the agendas of two figures who are very popular on the right, and those agendas — and perhaps others — are in conflict. We’ll have to wait to see how the politics play out. In the meantime, I want to address the more philosophical problems with Musk’s position. First of all, literally weighing the value or profligacy of a piece of legislation by the ounce, as Musk proposes, is not exactly logical. The National Industrial Recovery Act — the foundational legislation of the New Deal — comes in at an economical 18 pages, but that hardly gives one a sense of its massive impact on the economy. Then there’s the idea that Musk’s minor budget victory proves his X followers are “the media now.” Huh? The standard conservative complaint about traditional national media is that they mislead the public in the service of an ideological or self-serving agenda. Musk rallied his virtual mob with a host of false claims about the bigger-spending bill. Now he is suggesting that misleading the public in the service of the agenda of the owner of a media platform is a glorious triumph. It’s certainly a triumph for if-you-can’t-beat-them-join-them hypocrisy. Lastly, Musk’s oft-repeated motto “Vox populi, vox dei” — “The voice of the people is the voice of God” — is theological nonsense. Its use by British Whigs to challenge monarchical power in the 18th century was politically defensible, but it doesn’t take a divinity degree to understand that, taken literally, the phrase argues that God is subservient to the passions and vicissitudes of public opinion. It’s very difficult to find anything in the Old or New Testament to back up that idea. If a poll were all it took to change God’s mind, Sodom and Gomorrah would have been fine, Noah wouldn’t have needed a boat, and Jesus wouldn’t have had to ask God to “forgive them, for they know not what they do.” One of the earliest mentions of the Latin phrase is found in the writings of Alcuin of York, an adviser to Charlemagne. Alcuin told the first holy Roman emperor to ignore such declarations of public godliness “since the riotousness of the crowd is always very close to madness.” Musk started using the phrase “Vox populi, vox dei” to validate the verdicts of his own Twitter polls. When users voted to reinstate Trump’s account two years ago, Musk declared that the result he clearly wanted amounted to a divine statement. We can only guess what this says about Musk’s God complex and its compatibility with his role as Trump’s Alcuin. But my main objection to Musk’s assertion is that it’s a dangerous lie. The idea that the largest mob has God on its side is even more pernicious than the notion that legislation should be measured in pounds. NEW YORK, Dec. 29, 2024 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- WHY: Rosen Law Firm, a global investor rights law firm, reminds purchasers of common stock of Kyverna Therapeutics, Inc. (NASDAQ: KYTX) pursuant and/or traceable to the Kyverna’s initial public offering conducted on February 8, 2024 (the “IPO”), of the important February 7, 2025 lead plaintiff deadline. SO WHAT: If you purchased Kyverna common stock you may be entitled to compensation without payment of any out of pocket fees or costs through a contingency fee arrangement. WHAT TO DO NEXT: To join the Kyverna class action, go to https://rosenlegal.com/submit-form/?case_id=32239 or call Phillip Kim, Esq. toll-free at 866-767-3653 or email case@rosenlegal.com for information on the class action. A class action lawsuit has already been filed. If you wish to serve as lead plaintiff, you must move the Court no later than February 7, 2025. A lead plaintiff is a representative party acting on behalf of other class members in directing the litigation. WHY ROSEN LAW: We encourage investors to select qualified counsel with a track record of success in leadership roles. Often, firms issuing notices do not have comparable experience, resources, or any meaningful peer recognition. Many of these firms do not actually litigate securities class actions, but are merely middlemen that refer clients or partner with law firms that actually litigate cases. Be wise in selecting counsel. The Rosen Law Firm represents investors throughout the globe, concentrating its practice in securities class actions and shareholder derivative litigation. Rosen Law Firm achieved the largest ever securities class action settlement against a Chinese Company at the time. Rosen Law Firm was Ranked No. 1 by ISS Securities Class Action Services for number of securities class action settlements in 2017. The firm has been ranked in the top 4 each year since 2013 and has recovered hundreds of millions of dollars for investors. In 2019 alone the firm secured over $438 million for investors. In 2020, founding partner Laurence Rosen was named by law360 as a Titan of Plaintiffs’ Bar. Many of the firm’s attorneys have been recognized by Lawdragon and Super Lawyers. DETAILS OF THE CASE: According to the lawsuit, the registration statement and prospectus used to effectuate Kyverna’s IPO misstated and/or omitted facts concerning the results of Kyverna’s ongoing evaluation of KYV-101, Kyverna’s lead product candidate, in clinical trials. Specifically, Kyverna touted patient “improvement” in certain indicators while failing to disclose adverse data regarding one of Kyverna’s trials, which adverse data was known to Kyverna at the time of the IPO. When the true details entered the market, the lawsuit claims that investors suffered damages. To join the Kyverna class action, go to https://rosenlegal.com/submit-form/?case_id=32239 or call Phillip Kim, Esq. toll-free at 866-767-3653 or email case@rosenlegal.com for information on the class action. Luigi Mangione charged with murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, court record showsNEW ORLEANS (AP) — Saints quarterback Derek Carr was willing to risk his health to improve New Orleans’ chances of playing meaningful football in mid-December. Now the Saints, who’ve remained mathematically alive in the playoff race by winning three of four, might have to play without Carr again — and it didn’t go well the last time. Saints interim coach Darren Rizzi declined on Monday to rule out Carr for any of New Orleans' final four games because of his injured non-throwing hand or his concussion . Both injuries occurred when he tried to leap for a first down and crashed hard to the turf during the fourth quarter of New Orleans' 14-11 victory over the reeling New York Giants on Sunday. “We’re not going to rule him out just yet,” Rizzi said. “We have to see in the next day or two what the healing process is like and see if he can function. “The good news it’s not his throwing hand,” Rizzi said. “The bad news is we’re obviously dealing with an injury here that we have to kind of play it by ear.” Rizzi noted that Carr must clear the concussion protocol first. After that, he said, the Saints can see how well Carr can operate with his hand injury. “It's been done before,” Rizzi said when asked about the prospect of an NFL QB playing with an injured non-throwing hand. “It appears at moment that it's non-surgical, which is a big aspect of it. ... That's why we're going to discuss the options.” Last season, Los Angeles Chargers QB Justin Herbert played with a fractured finger on his non-throwing hand . Buffalo Bills QB Josh Allen has played part of this season with an injured non-throwing hand . If Carr can't play, his replacement will be either second-year pro Jake Haener or rookie Spencer Rattler. Rattler started three games earlier this season when Carr had an oblique injury — all losses by New Orleans, which was in the midst of a seven-game skid. “We've just got to surround whomever it is and pick him up and get him rolling with the rest of us,” guard Lucas Patrick said. “It's just another step of adversity in this long season that we’ve had.” New Orleans' interior defensive line is coming off one of its better games. Defensive tackles Bryan Bresee and Khalen Saunders accounted for both New Orleans' sacks in New York. The Saints also held the Giants to 112 yards rushing — a lower opponent rushing total than in seven other games this season. The Saints' 92 yards rushing offensively was their fourth-lowest total all season and the lowest in any of their victories. Running back Kendre Miller's future is looking a bit brighter now. He has played in just three games this season because of hamstring injuries and his lack of readiness was criticized by since-fired coach Dennis Allen earlier this season. Miller also has yet to rush for more than 36 yards in a game. But against the Giants, he earned praise for the speed, strength and elusiveness he was able to show on a couple of clutch runs, including an 8-yard run for his first and only touchdown this season. Patrick said Miller deserved credit on his scoring run for staying upright and continuing to push forward — with the help of some teammates — after he was met at the 5-yard line by a Giants defender. Patrick said if Miller didn't give the extra effort and stay on his feet, his teammates would not have had the chance to help push him across the goal line. “Kendre's definitely a bright, young runner and he's exciting to block for,” Patrick said. Blake Grupe was 0 for 2 on field goal attempts, although both were from beyond 50 yards and one was blocked. Those were Grupe's first two failures from beyond 50 yards this season. In addition to Carr, reserve linebacker D’Marco Jackson left Sunday's game with an ankle injury. 0 — The number of games the Saints have won when Carr does not play. They've gone 5-5 in his starts this season. The Saints are back home Sunday against Washington in what could be ex-New Orleans cornerback Marshon Lattimore's first game with the Commanders. The game also marks the return to Louisiana of quarterback Jayden Daniels, who won the Heisman Troply last year at LSU. AP NFL: https://apnews.com/hub/nflJaylen Blakes, Maxime Raynaud and Oziyah Sellers combined for 35 points in a 47-point, first half explosion Saturday afternoon and Stanford ran away from California for an 89-81 Atlantic Coast Conference road win in Berkeley, Calif. Raynaud and Blakes finished with 20 points apiece for the Cardinal (8-2, 1-0 ACC), who won their first ever game in ACC competition. Andrej Stojakovic had a game-high 25 points and Jovan Blacksher Jr. added 14 for the Golden Bears (6-3, 0-1), who dropped their second in a row after a 6-1 start. Playing just its second true road game of the season, Stanford scored 14 of the game's first 18 points and never looked back. Raynaud and Ryan Agarwal hit 3-pointers in the run. Blakes had 14 points, Raynaud 11 and Sellers 10 in the first half, which ended with Stanford in front 47-31. Cal was still down 81-65, after two free throws by Stanford's Chisom Okpara with 3:58 remaining before making a little run. Mady Sissoko converted a three-point play and Rytis Petraitis and Joshua Ola-Joseph connected on consecutive 3-pointers in a 9-0 flurry that made it a seven-point game with still 2:13 to go. It got as close as six when Stojakovic drilled a 3-pointer with 1:21 left, but Okpara and Blakes dropped in late layups to keep the hosts at arm's length. Seven of the nine Cardinal who saw action hit at least half his field goal attempts, led by Raynaud's 8-for-15 and Blakes' 7-for-13. Stanford finished 52.6 percent as a team. Both were deadly from the 3-point line as well, with Raynaud going 4-for-6 and Blakes 2-for-4. With Sellers adding 3-for-6, the Cardinal made 11 of their 23 attempts (47.8 percent) from beyond the arc. Raynaud also found time for five blocks, while Agarwal and Aidan Cammann shared Stanford rebound honors with seven. Blakes complemented his 20 points with a team-high six assists and two blocks. The Cardinal registered 19 assists on 30 baskets, while Cal had just five on its 30 hoops. Agarwal and Okpara each also scored in double figures with 11 points. Facing his old team for the first time after transferring to Cal over the summer, Stojakovic shot 11-for-25. The Golden Bears finished at 42.3 percent overall and 38.1 percent (8 of 21) on 3-pointers. Ola-Joseph and Sissoko, who had 11 points, were the game's leading rebounders with eight apiece. -Field Level Media
